We approached Street Roots about helping to build awareness, fundraising, and friendraising. Over the course of the summer, we led an OSU internship program on this pro bono journey from a blank sheet of paper to being on the local news.

Students + good cause + treats: Welcome to Bake Sale, our internship program that gives OSU students real world experience from concept to execution. Over the summer they learned strategy, collaboration, client interaction, naming, illustration, packaging design, advertising, photography and web design. What started as an idea ended with retail success and better earned media than many fully funded for-profit projects.

We approached Street Roots and asked for their time, trust, and access. They graciously agreed and trusted us to add to their established brand’s story.

We found an exceptional collaboration in Marigold Coffee, who had the generosity and the vision to commit to engaging with students on their vision.

Stimulus Package: The students were electrified by idea of lighting bolts having multiple meanings. They were used to reference caffeine, action, and the various contributions and steps of the newspaper’s process: writing, printing, and selling the paper.

Collaborating at every step of the way, the interns came up with the “laurels” of achievement framing each persona on the coffee bags. Following the process of creating the paper, the three illustrations represent new growth, flowering, then yielding coffee cherries.

A strong identity was created through a simple color scheme, and a library of endearing illustrations, bringing cohesion to all touch points. The student team was amazingly collaborative in all aspects of the project: strategy, naming, color schemes, illustrations, and packaging were truly a group effort, and their cooperation made for a seamless experience.

Given the phenomenal success the interns achieved for their project, our minds quickly went to the cringey-yet-understandable phenomena of the “My child is an honor student” bumper stickers. If our interns are achieving this much success with a pro bono project, what can we do for you?
